Inter-VLAN Routing

To make it possible for Hosts in different VLANs to communicate, you need to do "Inter-VLAN Routing". There are some ways to make Inter-VLAN Routing possible for example:

Layer 3 Switch:

These switches operate on Layer 3. Therefore they don't use MAC-Addresses but IP-Addresses. Unfortunately they are a lot more expensive.

Router on a Stick:

 

To use a router on a stick, one Interface of the switch is configured as a trunk. The trunk is connected to a virtual Interface on the router.

Configuring a Router on a Stick:
  • Configure a port on the switch as a trunk: switchport mode trunk
